He’s credited with weeding out corruption in New York City, ushering in a wave of modern infrastructure in the Big Apple, and above all, being a tireless and outspoken champion of progressive causes, from promoting immigration to speaking up for the rights of oppressed minorities and struggling families. One could argue that there’s a lot the current crop of presidential candidates could stand to learn from New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia.

The South Bay Musical Theatre is telling his story in a new musical at the Saratoga Civic Theater through Oct. 10. But why should anyone on this side of the country care about the former mayor of a city that’s some 3,000 miles away? The show will appeal to anyone interested in history or politics, or who enjoys a good character story of a fascinating person, said producer Jay Steele.

“The story is enjoyable for anyone; particularly coming into an election year you see a lot of what politics was like in the 20th century,” Steele said.

SBMT’s production of “Fiorello!” tells the story of one of the early 20th century’s most colorful characters and beloved mayors. LaGuardia was deemed “a man of the people” at a time when the city of New York was rife with corruption. The musical chronicles his experience overcoming great odds as he rose to power and found love along the way.

“I think one of the major themes is his fighting corruption and standing up for principles,” Steele said. “Fiorello was a very principled guy and he really fights for what he thinks is right.”

The tale, described by SBMT as “witty, sweet and upbeat,” is told through a tuneful score and gripping script penned by Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick, the legendary writers behind “Fiddler on the Roof” and “She Loves Me.” The musical is based on a book by Jerome Weidman and George Abbott, originally making its Broadway debut in 1959 and enjoying a two-year run during which it took home the prestigious Pulitzer Prize for Drama, an accolade that has been awarded to only eight musicals in Broadway history.

The SBMT board chose to stage “Fiorello!” to introduce audiences to a show that’s not as widely known, said Steele.

“We try to get a mix of familiar and classic shows that people know and love,” said Steele. “This was definitely in that category of something new. I think it’s a show that is not done that often but we feel it really is a gem of a theatrical experience and it also has a little bit of an education factor.”

A cast of 32 will bring the musical to life under the direction of C. Michael Traw. Tim Reynolds plays the lead role while Glenna Murillo plays the role of Marie, LaGuardia’s longtime assistant. Elizabeth McClelland plays Thea, his wife.

Tickets for “Fiorello!” are $20 to $35 and can be purchased on SBMT’s website atsouthbaymt.com and at the door if they are available. For more information, call 408.266.4734.
