Coast Guard responds to sinking boat carrying 27 children

The Coast Guard rescued 33 people, 27 of them children, from an 85-foot vessel that was sinking in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta this afternoon, a Coast Guard petty officer said.

The Coast Guard received a report around 12:30 p.m. that the “Fairlawns” vessel was sinking a couple hundred yards from the shore in Concord.

A helicopter and boats were deployed, and all the passengers were removed from the sinking vessel by about 1 p.m.

Petty Officer Ryan Roberts said the boat started taking on water after striking something.

No injuries have been reported.
