Morgan Hill police are investigating the death this week of a 22-year-old cyclist who was struck by a Cadillac last month.
On the evening of Oct. 23, a 66-year-old woman driving a 2004 Cadillac slammed into Rory Tomasello as he made his way across a crosswalk west of the intersection of Monterey Road and Edmundson Avenue.
When officers arrived, they found Tomasello lying in the middle of the outside westbound lane, appearing disoriented and with the back of his neck and stomach reddened. He complained of pain to his leg. Witnesses said he was not wearing a helmet.
Emergency medical crews took Tomasello to the Regional Medical Center of San Jose, where he succumbed to his injuries Monday.
Witnesses told police that a person driving west Edmundson Avenue on the inside lane stopped at the crosswalk to allow Tomasello to cross. But as he entered the outside lane, the Cadillac struck Tomasello, causing him to tumble in front of the vehicle.
Sgt. Jerry Neumayer said the driver was not cited and that the incident is under investigation. Police will then turn over the case to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office for review of any possible criminal charges.
