A Monterey man today pleaded not guilty to charges of assault resulting in the death of an 8-month-old child and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor at his arraignment in court on Wednesday, according to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office.
William Fajardo, 25, was arrested the evening of July 24 at Casa Verde Inn, located at 2113 N. Fremont St. in Monterey.
Police believe that on that night, Fajardo abused his underage girlfriend’s 8-month-old child while he was alone with the baby in a motel room. Fajardo told officers the child was unconscious because he had fallen off the bed, however investigators found that the child’s injuries reflected shaken baby syndrome, police reported.
The child, named Baby Doe, died three days later at Stanford Lucille Packard Hospital, according to police.
Fajardo, whose girlfriend is 17-years-old, is also charged with unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
Fajardo is being held without bail at Monterey County jail.
