Hit-and-run driver who struck cyclist and son still at large

San Francisco police are continuing to ask for the public’s assistance in finding a driver who struck a local cyclist and his 4-year-old son in San Francisco’s Mission District earlier this month.

A driver raced through a red light on the morning of July 1 and knocked down Andrew Bennett and his son as they were crossing at the intersection of Valencia and 18th streets, police said. The driver did not return to offer help.

Bennett, a 42-year-old carpenter and member of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, suffered a fractured spine in the collision, according to Marc Caswell, program manager with the organization.

“We’d like to see this driver brought to justice and have him or her held responsible for their actions,” Caswell said.

He is improving, Caswell said, but Bennett’s injuries have kept him out of work for the past month.

His son fell to the ground but was not injured.

The vehicle is described as a gray Chrysler PT Cruiser or sport utility vehicle with a possible partial license plate that reads “KAY” followed by a heart-shaped symbol. The vehicle may have been damaged.

The driver of the car is possibly a dark-haired woman in her late 20s. She was alone at the time of the collision.

Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is urged to contact Inspector Jim Custer at (415) 553-9516 or to call the confidential tip line at (415) 575-4444.
