San Jose police are investigating a crash near Municipal Stadium this morning in which a man was killed after losing control and being catapulted from his Honda.
The crash occurred around 6 a.m. at East Alma Avenue at South 10th Street.
It appears that a man between 30 and 35 years old was going south on South 10th Street and lost control of his red Honda Civic, police Officer Jose Garcia said.
He was going faster than the posted 30 mph speed limit, but investigators have not yet determined exactly how fast he was going, Garcia said.
As he was crossing East Alma Avenue, the man lost control of his car and struck a telephone pole and a tree, Garcia said. The impact caused him to be thrown from the car onto the northbound lanes, Garcia said.
“We surmise he was traveling at a high rate of speed, because the car was completely totaled,” Garcia said.
Shortly thereafter, a 32-year-old woman who was going north in a Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck swerved to go around the debris from the crash, Garcia said.
The woman pulled over at the intersection thinking that she had run over something and had a flat tire, but realized she had ran over a person and called police, Garcia said.
It appears she dragged the victim about 100 feet, he said.
The man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The engine of his car was found right next to the telephone pole and his car was found about 50 feet away from the pole, Garcia said.
The woman was traveling alone in her car. She was not injured or cited, Garcia said.
It appears the victim was the driver of the Honda but it’s possible there could have been other people in the car who might have fled afterward, Garcia said.
The crash caused the closure of a number of nearby roads this morning.
