Two people who died after Friday’s fire identified

The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office today identified the two people who died after a fire in San Jose on Friday night as 59-year-old Mike Mendez and 95-year-old Mary Mendez.

The fire was reported at a one-story home on Brownstone Court shortly before 4 p.m. Friday, and was controlled in about 40 minutes.

Six people were injured and were taken to Valley Medical Center, including a caretaker of Mary Mendez’s, two neighbors and a passerby who stopped by to help.

Mary Mendez succumbed to her injuries Wednesday, according to the medical examiner’s office. Mike Mendez died Monday.

Fire Capt. Chuck Rangel said the two victims were related, but he did not know the nature of their relationship.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
