A 31-year-old San Jose man remains in critical condition after crashing into a tree in Campbell early Saturday morning, according to a police spokesman.

The crash occurred around 1:30 a.m. at the intersection of Harriet Avenue and San Tomas Aquino Road.

The man was going south on Harriet Avenue and was trying to make a left turn on East San Tomas Aquino Road when he lost control of his Nissan and struck a tree, Campbell police Capt. David Carmichael said.

The man was found unconscious and was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, Carmichael said. As of Thursday, he was in critical condition.

Detectives are investigating the cause of the crash. Carmichael said it appears both speed and alcohol played a role.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Officer Terry Gallagher at (408) 866-2121.
