A transient killed in a homeless encampment behind a radio station in San Jose earlier this month has been identified as 46-year-old Jose Lopez, police said today.

Lopez was stabbed to death behind AM radio station KSJX, located at 501 Wooster Ave., shortly before 1 a.m. on March 22.

The following day, police arrested 53-year-old Miguel Garcia, also a transient, in connection with the crime. Police believe the stabbing occurred during a physical fight between the men.

Garcia has been charged with one count of voluntary manslaughter. He also faces an enhancement for use of a knife during the commission of a crime, district attorney’s spokeswoman Amy Cornell said.

He will appear in Santa Clara County Superior Court to enter a plea on Friday.

Police are continuing to investigate the stabbing, which marked the city’s sixth homicide this year.
