In commemoration of “A Day Without a Bag,” volunteers with the San Francisco chapter of the Surfrider Foundation and OceanHealth.org will distribute reusable shopping bags to holiday shoppers at San Francisco’s Union Square this afternoon.

The bags, an alternative to single-use plastic bags, will be donated by Whole Foods Market and the Surfrider Foundation, a volunteer organization of surfers and ocean enthusiasts that promotes environmental quality of local beaches and oceans.

Organizers say “A Day Without a Bag” is a reminder to shoppers to bring their own bags when going to any store that uses single-use plastic bags.

The event is part of an ongoing effort to educate consumers about the dangers of plastic bags. Each year a million seabirds and 100,000 marine animals die globally due to ingestion of or entanglement in plastics, organizers say.

“A Day Without a Bag” will begin at noon with informational booths set up at the corner of Powell and Geary streets.
