Palo Alto police are cautioning residents to not leave valuables inside their cars following a string of burglaries over the last two weeks.

The Police Department has increased patrols in areas near downtown and the Stanford Shopping Center, where many of the break-ins have occurred, according to police.

Police investigated 28 auto break-ins between Aug. 16 and last Friday. The thieves have been taking laptop computers, GPS units, cell phones and other electronics, police said.

Anyone who witnesses a break-in is encouraged to call 911.
