Library patrons at San Jose’s two downtown libraries partook in a celebration Tuesday afternoon marking the passage of the 100th million-item checkout.

As of 8:19 p.m. on May 11, more than 100 million items had been checked out since the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library opened its doors on Aug. 1, 2003.

Tuesday’s celebration, which included free cake, was held on the ground floor near “The Counter,” a public art piece that tracks checkout and renewal activity in real time.

The library is located at 150 E. San Fernando St.
