Police are in a standoff at a Sunnyvale home this afternoon with a man who stabbed a family member during a dispute early this morning, a Department of Public Safety spokesman said.
A standoff began shortly after 10 a.m. and was still under way as of 2:40 p.m. in the 200 block of Velvetlake Drive, spokesman John Pilger said.
At about 5 a.m., a family member driving on Lawrence Expressway called police to report that a person had been stabbed and needed medical assistance.
Officers arrived and helped transport the victim, whose injuries are not considered life-threatening, Pilger said.
Around 10 a.m., a resident of Velvetlake Drive called police to say a man was sneaking into the backyard of a home.
Officers arrived and went to the backyard, where they heard a man calling out “Get out of here, I’ve got a gun,” Pilger said.
Officers closed Velvetlake Drive and the two right lanes of Lawrence Expressway to secure the area. A SWAT team was called for assistance.
Negotiators have had on-and-off contact with the man, Pilger said.
He said it appears the man is alone inside the home.
