San Jose’s famous peregrine falcon Clara delivered her first egg of the year this morning on a ledge atop City Hall, more than a week earlier than in years past, city officials said.
The delivery occurred at about 9:57 a.m. and was broadcast on the city’s FalconCam, a live streaming video of the falcon’s nest on a City Hall ledge 18 stories above the street.
Clara is expected to deliver additional eggs in the coming days, since female falcons continue to lay eggs at two- to three-and-a-half-day intervals.
The laying of the egg came more than a week earlier than in 2008 and 2009. This is Clara’s fourth nesting season at City Hall and her second with mate Esteban Colbert.
The FalconCam can be viewed on the city’s Web site at http://www.sanjoseca.gov. The FalconCam was recently upgraded and now includes a second camera that provides new vistas around the nestbox and City Hall.
