Investigators have ruled out foul play in the death of a man whose body was found inside a burning car in Sunnyvale on Wednesday afternoon.

The man’s charred body was found at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday inside an older four-door Chevrolet parked outside of an apartment complex at 874 Borregas Ave., Department of Public Safety Capt. David Verbrugge said.

Firefighters and DPS officers responded to find the interior of the car on fire and the body of a man sitting upright in the driver’s seat, Verbrugge said.

The man’s identity has not yet been released pending next of kin notification. Verbrugge said investigators have determined the death was not a homicide.

Verbrugge said fire investigators are investigating the possibility that a cigarette may have started the fire, but said the official cause is under investigation.
