Beachgoers at the Capitola Wharf today were warned to enter at their own risk following numerous shark sightings this week, police said today.
The signs, posted by the Capitola Police Department at the entrance and around the wharf on Wednesday, advised swimmers about the shark sightings, Capitola police Sgt. Matt Eller said.
Two surfers on Wednesday morning separately reported seeing a shark they described was about 6 to 8 feet long, tan on the top and dark on the bottom, resembling a great white shark, Eller said.
The beach was not closed Wednesday or today, although there were relatively fewer people in the water on Wednesday, Eller said.
On Tuesday afternoon, a fisherman reported seeing two sharks. The sightings have not been confirmed, he said.
Eller said standard lifeguards are on duty but advised that swimmers should be cautious just in case.
“We notified state park lifeguards above and down the coast of possible sightings, so everyone is keeping an eye out,” Eller said. “As of today we’ve heard no reported sightings.”
