The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office today released the name of a 32-year-old man who fell 35 to 50 feet onto a trail off of northbound U.S. Highway 101 to avoid an oncoming spinning vehicle Tuesday morning.

Abundio Prudente, of Madera, was driving on the wet roadway when at about 5:48 a.m. he lost control of his car and spun out, San Jose fire Capt. Scott Kouns said.

When Prudente and a passenger exited the vehicle, they noticed another car spinning out of control toward them, Kouns said.

Prudente jumped out of the way of the spinning car and ended up going over the side of the highway and falling onto Coyote Creek Trail below.

The victim was taken to a hospital after fire crews hoisted him back up to the highway on a backboard, but he died shortly thereafter.
