Police today identified a 67-year-old woman who died after being struck by a car in San Jose on Wednesday night as Xaiu Lu.
Lu, a San Jose resident, was walking west across North Jackson Avenue at Alexian Drive in a crosswalk around 6:35 p.m. when she was hit by a Nissan Sentra traveling north on North Jackson Avenue, police said.
She was taken to the nearby Regional Medical Center of San Jose where she died.
The driver, a 65-year-old San Jose woman, remained at the scene after the collision and cooperated with investigators.
The cause of the collision is under investigation. Police said there are no indications that the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The death marks the city’s 14th fatal vehicle-versus-pedestrian traffic collision of the year.
Police are reminding motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians to be aware of their surroundings and to be extra cautious during peak evening commute hours due to the recent daylight savings time change.
Motorists are recommended to look out for pedestrians, including those using skates, scooters, or skateboards, as well as bicyclists and motorcycles. When going out at night, pedestrians and bicyclists are advised to wear bright and or reflective clothing or safety wear, and carry a flashlight.
Police are reminding pedestrians and bicyclists that they are required to use marked crosswalks and obey traffic controls signals, signs and markings.
Bicyclists are required by California law to have a headlamp, whether attached to the bicycle or on the person, visible 300 feet to the front and sides, and a rear red reflector visible 500 feet to the rear when illuminated by motor vehicle headlamps.
