Two youth winners of the C.J. Watson Essay Contest will be honored Monday night in an on-court ceremony during the Golden State Warriors basketball game versus the San Antonio Spurs at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.
Darzell Stringer and Lenin Ocampo, both fifth graders from W.P. Williams Elementary School in Las Vegas, Nevada, were selected to win an essay contest in which they were assigned to write an essay titled “Yes We Can!” about an event in black history that they felt changed or influenced
America’s way of life.
Warriors guard C.J. Watson, who was involved in the selection of the winners and a Las Vegas resident himself, expressed excitement over the students’ achievement.
“They achieved a goal by winning this contest and hopefully this trip will inspire them to set more goals in the future and work hard to achieve them,” Watson said in a prepared statement.
