Police are investigating the death of a woman found shot near railroad tracks in Richmond today, a police sergeant said.

The body was reported around 2 p.m. by a train conductor who said he spotted the woman in the area of Chesley Avenue and Filbert Street when he passed through the area, and then found her still there when he returned hours later, Sgt. Bisa French said.

He did not report the find at first because he mistook her for a homeless person and thought she was sleeping, French said.

French did not have additional details on the investigation.
