A Sunnyvale man will be arraigned in Palo Alto on Friday in connection with the murder of his wife six years ago.

Gary Swierski, 50, of Sunnyvale, was arrested on Wednesday in connection with the death of Reina Swierski, according to prosecutors.

The arrest was made following an investigation that was recently reopened by a cold case unit formed by newly elected Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen. The unit uses DNA evidence to investigate unsolved murders, rapes and violent assaults.

Swierski was reported missing in March 2005. Her body has never been found, but her skull was discovered near Boulder Creek in April 2008, prosecutors said.

In addition to the cold case unit, the investigation also involved the county crime lab and the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Department of Public Safety Detective Greg Giguiere at (408) 730-7288.
