Police are continuing to investigate an officer-involved shooting in San Jose late Thursday night in which a 47-year-old man was killed after he allegedly pointed a gun at two police officers, a department spokesman said.

The man has yet to be identified but is a resident of San Jose, police Sgt. Jason Dwyer said.

An officer shot the man around 11:30 p.m. inside a bedroom at a home in the 2100 block of Inman Way, Dwyer said.

Just minutes prior to the shooting, that officer and another officer were patrolling the area when they spotted a man walking in the neighborhood drinking beer, Dwyer said.

When the man, a 24-year-old resident of San Jose, saw the officers approaching, he took off running and officers chased him into a house that he barged into without a key, Dwyer said.

As one officer knocked the man to the ground inside the home, the man took a gun out from his waistband and tossed it into a bedroom, Dwyer said.

Another man in the bedroom picked up the gun from the ground and aimed it at the two officers who were standing in the doorway. One officer fired one round and struck the man once, Dwyer said.

They attempted to give him first aid by applying direct pressure using towels and blankets until paramedics arrived. He was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose, where he was pronounced dead at 12:13 a.m., Dwyer said.

The suspect who ran from police was booked into Santa Clara County Jail. Police are not yet releasing his name or the name of the officer involved in the shooting.

Dwyer said that officer has nine years of police experience, seven with the San Jose Police Department. Police will release his name later today, Dwyer said.

Both he and the second officer have been placed on routine paid administrative leave.

The handgun passed from the first suspect to the second was recovered, Dwyer said.

The two men were apparently acquaintances, Dwyer said.

He said there were “several other people” inside the house at the time of the shooting, but no one else was harmed.
