Cloudy, wet weather to continue in the Bay Area

The Bay Area will continue to see cloudy and moderately wet weather tonight and throughout Monday, especially in areas south of San Francisco, according to a National Weather Service forecaster.

Rain was heaviest in the North Bay today, with 2.36 inches of moderate rainfall in San Rafael and around 4 inches of rain in the mountains in the North Bay, forecaster Bob Benjamin said.

San Francisco saw up to an inch of rain and Oakland experienced 1.22 inches of rain.

The focal point of the rain will move from the North Bay, which Benjamin said has already experienced the worst of it, down to the Santa Cruz and Monterey regions, which will experience 2 to 3 inches of rain tonight and through the morning hours, Benjamin said.

The flatlands and mountainous areas could experience up to 1.5 inches overnight with the coastal region from Big Sur and northern regions also experiencing fair amounts of rain, Benjamin said.

Rainfall will remain steady tonight and will taper to isolated and scattered showers throughout the week, Benjamin said.

Locally gusty south winds are also expected through Monday, according to the weather service.

The storm comes after parts of the Bay Area absorbed up to 11 inches of rain in some areas, causing easier runoff and also raising the possibility of mudslides and sliding rocks, according to the weather service.
