Two Veteran’s Day events taking place in downtown

A parade and town hall meeting are being hosted in San Jose today in observance of Veterans Day.

The 93rd Annual Veteran’s Day Parade, hosted by the United Veterans Council of Santa Clara County, was set to begin at noon near 374 W. Santa Clara St.

The parade will be preceded by a ceremony with Mayor Chuck Reed, who was scheduled to speak at 11 a.m. near the San Jose Tech Museum, located at Park Avenue and South Market Street.

Also this morning, the “Occupy the Streets” group, comprised of Silicon Valley organizations, are hosting a town hall at San Jose State University to honor Scott Olsen, the Iraq War veteran and “Occupy Oakland” protester who suffered a skull fracture from a projectile launched by police last month.

The town hall was set to start at 10:15 a.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library at 150 E. San Fernando St.

The groups sponsoring “Occupy the Streets” includes the American Federation of Teachers Local 6157, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, California Faculty Association, Communication Workers of America Local 9423, Next Gen Bay Area, Sacred Heart Community Service Leaders, Service Employees International Union Locals 521 and USWW, Silicon Valley Independent Living Center, South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council, UNITE HERE Local 19, United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 5 and Working Partnerships USA.
