Both lanes of state Highway 17 in Monterey were closed this afternoon following a fatal crash, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash, involving possibly three vehicles, was reported at about 3:10 p.m. on southbound Highway 17 near state Highway 1, CHP Officer Peter Van Eckhardt said.
One person died in the crash, Van Eckhardt said. The victim is a 30-year-old woman from Santa Cruz.
As of 4:30 p.m., traffic on southbound Highway 17 was being diverted to northbound Highway 1 while officers investigated the crash.
One witness reported that a person driving in the wrong direction may have contributed to the crash, Van Eckhardt said.
