61-year-old man shot to death while leaving for work

A 61-year-old man was fatally shot near his car in Salinas early Sunday morning as he was getting ready to leave for work, police said today.

Artemio Garcia was shot around 4:45 a.m. in the 100 block of Casentini Street, Sgt. Chris Lane said.

Police responded to a report of a shooting, and when they arrived, they found Garcia suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lane said the shooting does not appear to be gang-related.

The shooter was gone by the time police arrived and remains at large.
