A 66-year-old San Luis Obispo man died in a crash on U.S. Highway 101 near Gilroy on Saturday, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 10:35 p.m. near the Carnadero Creek bridge just south of Gilroy, CHP Officer Tiffany Lopez said.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was driving a motor home south on the freeway when, for unknown reasons, he went off the roadway and struck a metal guardrail, Lopez said.

The motor home then bounced back and struck a 2003 Toyota Corolla driven by a 43-year-old Salinas woman.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing his seat belt, CHP officials said.

The driver of the Toyota was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. Two male passengers in the Toyota, ages 21 and 37, were not injured, Lopez said.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Lopez said a preliminary report indicates the man had medical conditions that contributed to or caused his death.

Drugs and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash.

Lopez said it was raining at the time of the crash.
