Attorneys of Sagal Mohamod Sadiq described the San Jose woman who is accused of murdering the 65-year-old mother of her domestic partner with a machete last week as being ‘frightened’ and ‘depressed.’
Attorneys Lee Mezzetti and Michael Cardoza said they plan to enter a ‘not guilty’ plea on Sadiq’s behalf at a hearing on Jan. 19.
“We will defend this case very vigorously and very strongly,” Cardoza said today, following a hearing where Sadiq briefly appeared with her hands cuffed and her left arm bandaged.
Sadiq, a 40-year-old registered nurse, is facing one count of homicide with a use of a deadly weapon enhancement in connection with the death of Yvonne Marie Kirk at Sadiq’s home in the 1900 block of Johnston Avenue on Friday.
When officers arrived at the home a little after 11 p.m., Sadiq allegedly told them that they both had been physically attacked, police said.
Kirk was pronounced dead at the scene, while Sadiq was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she was treated and released, police said.
Authorities later classified Sadiq as a suspect in the case, and she was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail on suspicion of homicide, where she remains in custody without bail.
Investigators recovered the machete believed to have been used in the murder.
Kirk lived in San Jose and was the mother of Sadiq’s domestic partner.
“The family is devastated,” prosecutor Dan Fehderau said. “They would like to see justice in this case.”
