The Sundown Cinema series is back this summer and promises popular classics featuring the likes of Jimmy Stewart, Robert Redford, Sylvester Stallone and Lauren Bacall.
The outdoor movie series kicks off around sundown on June 29 in the parking lot next to Orchard Valley Coffee with a screening of the 1940 romantic comedy The Shop Around the Corner. The parking lot is located near the corner of E. Campbell and Central avenues.
The 10-movie series, now in its ninth year, is presented by the Downtown Campbell Business Association.
“It’s a good community feel-good kind of thing,” said Sonya Paz, president of the DCBA.
The shows tend to draw about 200 people a night on average, Paz said.
The movies are all family friendly and vary in subject matter to appeal to different audiences, she said.
The series continues with Rocky on July 6, To Kill a Mockingbird on July 13, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid on July 20, Harold and Maude on July 27, The Big Sleep on Aug. 3, Mary Poppins on Aug. 10, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off on Aug. 17 and The Candidate on Aug. 24.
As per tradition, the audience will select the final film of the season to be shown on Aug. 31. Written nominations will be collected about halfway through the season, after which the the top three nominated movies are put up for an online vote on the Downtown Campbell website. The movie that receives the most votes by the afternoon of Aug. 24 will be named the winner.
Movies are screened every Friday, typically around 8:30 p.m. after sunset, and end around 11 p.m.
Attendees are invited to bring along a lawn chair and blanket. They can bring their own snacks or buy the typical movie theater fare–popcorn, candy and soda–from a concession stand. Alcohol and smoking are not allowed.
There is no admission fee.
