Rotary golf tourney raises bucks for charities

The Campbell Rotary Club is hosting its annual charity golf tournament to raise money for various local projects that include renovations to the Los Gatos Creek Trail and helping the families of military veterans.

The focus of this year’s tournament is the PAR Course renovation project at the Los Gatos Creek Trail, which consists of refurbishing the exercise stations on the Campbell side, said tournament chairman Jim Neal.

“Nothing’s been done there for 30 years, so we’re going to help renovate that,” Neal said.

The rest of the proceeds will be allocated to the Campbell Rotary’s Enterprise Leadership Conference, which is held every spring to teach high school juniors principles of business in the American free enterprise system; a homeless shelter in San Jose; and the Fisher House in Palo Alto. The program donates homes built on the grounds of major military and veterans affairs medical centers that enable family members of injured military veterans to be close to them during their hospitalization for an unexpected illness, disease or injury.

The Willow Glen Rotary Club hosted the tournament for 27 years before merging with the Campbell Rotary Club, said Neal. Organizers raised around $8,500 at the last tournament in 2010. There was no tournament last year.

The golf tournament is open to all and includes a barbecue lunch, award ceremony and banquet. The cost is $165 per person, and also includes green fees, golf cart and beverages on the golf course throughout the day.

At the award ceremony, there will be prizes for the winning team and longest drive, among other categories. There will also be door prizes, raffle prizes and a silent auction at the banquet.

The golf tournament will take place at the Villages in San Jose on Aug. 17 from 1 to 6 p.m. Preregistration and lunch will begin at 11 a.m. The banquet will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m.
