A 30-day grace period began Wednesday for two automated enforcement camera systems at the busiest intersection in Fremont, the Police Department announced.
The Fremont Police Department and Transportation Engineering Department has worked with Cal Trans have worked together for the past two years to obtain encroachment permits for the installation of red light cameras at the intersection of Mission Boulevard and Warm Springs Boulevard, rated 19th for the highest number of traffic signal-related collisions over the past 10 years and 11th for overall collisions in the past five years.
The system operates by recording four photographs and a 12-second video capturing the violation, the driver and the license plate of the vehicle that crosses the limit line or enters the pedestrian crosswalk after the light has turned red.
A citation is sent to the registered owner of the vehicle after the footage is reviewed by the Police Department and the owner is given 30 days to respond to the notice.
For the next 30 days, violators will receive a warning letter but beginning May 1, violators will be subject to a minimum of $436 for each violation.
