The Bay Area Baseball League will hold an opening day ceremony in Fremont on Sunday to kick off a new season dedicated to four Oakland police officers who were shot and killed on March 21.
The league will honor Sgts. Mark Dunakin, Ervin Romans, Daniel Sakai and Officer John Hege. Police said they were killed by 26-year-old Oakland resident Lovelle Mixon, an ex-felon who was wanted on a no-bail warrant for allegedly violating his parole by failing to meet with his parole
officer.
The incident began when Dunakin and Hege made a traffic stop on Mixon at 74th Avenue and MacArthur Boulevard shortly after 1 p.m. that day.
Mixon was killed at the end of his confrontation with police.
The baseball players will commence Sunday’s 9 a.m. game at Northgate Park with a minute of silence, a tradition they will repeat before each game throughout the season.
The league consists of two divisions forming 20 teams with high school and college level players.
