Bay Area post offices to extend hours for tax filers

Post offices throughout the Bay Area will remain open late into the night on April 15 to extend the cutoff time for tax filers, a U.S. Postal Service spokesman said today.

Although the number of paper filers has decreased over the years as a result of the electronic filing option, spokesman Augustine Ruiz said the Postal Service is still anticipating a high volume of tax filers at the post office.

“We have probably the world’s most famous procrastinators,” Ruiz said.

Ruiz is encouraging tax filers to drop off their mailings prior to the deadline to avoid congestion at the post office. Tax filers are also advised to get their mailings weighted properly and add the appropriate postage.

Participating post offices in the North Bay include the Napa Post Office, which will extend its hours until 8 p.m., and Vallejo Post Office, which will remain open until 6 p.m.

In the East Bay, extended hours will be offered at post offices in Antioch, Concord, Livermore, Fremont, Dublin, Lafayette, Berkeley, Hayward, San Ramon, Pleasanton and Union City. Additionally, the Oakland Main Post Office will stay open until midnight.

In the South Bay, the San Jose Main Post Office will remain open until midnight and the San Jose Willow Glen Post Office will close its doors at 7 p.m.
