Want to learn about issues affecting higher education in California and the opportunities and barriers facing future college students? The League of Women Voters of Santa Clara County is hosting a forum on the topic at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills on Sept. 19.
“There has been widespread media coverage concerning the need for reform in our state system of higher education,” said Eleanor Yick, chairwoman of the league’s state study committee. “While the LWVC has long held positions on pre-K through 12 and the California Community system in our state, there has not been a policy inclusive of the California State University system and the University of California system.”
A group of educators has been selected for the panel, including Chris Funk, superintendent of East Side Union High School District; Patricia Lopez, an assistant professor in educational leadership at San Jose State University; Laura Casas, a trustee on the Foothill-DeAnza Community College District board; and Loo Loo Amante, a fourth-year student at San Jose State University.
Carol Christ, who serves as a director of the University of California Center for Studies in Higher Education, will give the keynote speech while Wade Ellis, a longtime league member as well as a distinguished author and math teacher, will moderate the forum. Ellis recently retired from West Valley College after 30 years.
The forum begins 9 a.m. in the Foothill Hearthside Lounge, 12345 El Monte Road. Members of the education community, as well as the general public, are invited to attend. Reservations can be made by writing to toleague@cs.ca.lwvnet.org.
