Amy Chan will be stepping into familiar shoes when she takes on the interim city manager post in Cupertino next month to succeed David Brandt.
She came out of retirement six years ago to do the same after then-city manager David Knapp retired. Prior to retiring herself, she was a city manager for Sunnyvale.
“I look forward to being a part of the Cupertino family again,” she said in a press statement on Thursday. “While there will be many challenges facing the community over the next few months, I’m optimistic that we will reach positive outcomes by working together.”
Cupertino Mayor Darcy Paul said he thinks she’ll fit right in when she begins her new (old) job on July 5.
“As someone with experience in this exact role, she will be able to help council effect a seamless and successful transition between our permanent city managers,” Paul said.
The City Council appointed Chan to the position, which she’s expected to hold for about six months, while the city searches for a permanent successor.
Until then, “the city is in great hands with Amy,” said Brandt, who gave his friend a glowing recommendation.
“She’s the consummate professional and has been a good friend of mine during my time here at Cupertino,” he said. “She should be able to fit right into the organization since she’s well known and respected by council and staff.”
Brandt announced his resignation in May after nearly six years as the city’s top administrative officer. He said at the time that he’s moving to Oregon to lead a nonprofit and be closer to his children.
In Cupertino, the city manager answers to the City Council for the operation of the city and oversees all city departments. The city manager also works closely with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office, Santa Clara County Fire Department and the city’s elementary, high school and college districts.
