The Bay Area will be wet and cold this afternoon and may get colder and wetter throughout the week, National Weather Service forecaster Diana Henderson said this morning.
A winter weather advisory is in effect in the mountains south of the Golden Gate. There is a possibility of snow showers as low as 1,000 feet throughout the afternoon.
Henderson said people who are traveling up to Bay Area peaks this afternoon should expect conditions to be “treacherous, nasty and cold.”
Overnight lows in the Bay Area are expected to be in the 20s and 30s. The lowest regional temperature could be about 25 degrees in the Santa Rosa area, Henderson said.
It is rare for the Bay Area to experience such cold weather, Henderson said.
“Snow in the hills is pretty much a rare occurrence,” she said. “But it makes people very happy… except those who move here to get away from it.”
Henderson said the snow would not last very long.
North Bay valleys will be especially affected by the cold, Henderson said. A freeze watch is in effect for tonight and roads are expected to be icy – a hazard that is also expected in some parts of the South Bay.
Scattered showers are expected throughout the day, along with isolated thunderstorms in the afternoon. More showers are expected tomorrow.
“Slow down and be careful,” Henderson advised.
