The crab season was underway, then it wasn’t. Now, it appears to be back in motion and that’s a good thing for Saratoga residents who can now look forward to the “Jazz and Crab” event coming up on Jan. 20. And, yes, there will be plenty of crab, so don’t forget to bring a bib.
The event will be hosted by the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce and it will be the first of its kind in Saratoga in years, according to Emma Cherniss, a spokeswoman for the Chamber.
“We used to have a crab feed, but I think the last one was in 2010,” she said. “And they were big hits. Our board member, Anne Davis, had the idea to bring it back and we’re doing it.”
The event is meant to highlight businesses in the area while also raising money for the Chamber’s larger events, Cherniss said.
To that end, they will have not only the crab feed, but live jazz bands, a silent auction and wine and beer for sale. The wine will be provided by Fortino Winery in Gilroy while the crab will be delivered by Infin8 Dreams, Cherniss said. The San Francisco-based company provides crabs to organizations that host crab feeds. Cherniss indicated that as of early January, the company had not reported any issues pertaining to the harvest or delivery of crabs.
The commercial Dungeness crab season in Northern California was delayed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife last month when pre-season quality tests revealed poor meat quality test results. As of Jan. 3, though, the department’s website indicates that crab the harvest the south of the Sonoma/Mendocino county line was open.
Which is perfect timing for the Chamber’s event on Jan. 20 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Joan Pisani Community Center, 19655 Allendale Ave. Cherniss said the Chamber is expecting around 200 people to attend the event. The silent auction will feature items from local professional sports teams, wine baskets and gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses.
Tickets are $60 for adults and $30 for children under 12 up until Jan. 6. After that, they’ll increase by $10 for adults and $5 for kids. Tickets can be purchased at the Chamber office, online through its site or at the event.
