Donations needed for new plaque at ‘Roosevelt Tree’

By Khalida Sarwari

The plaque acknowledging the history and importance of the “Roosevelt Tree” in Vasona Park was stolen for its metal value last year.

The history of the tree goes back to 1903 when it was planted on the southwest corner of Campbell Avenue and Winchester Boulevard by President Theodore Roosevelt. It was removed in 1964 to widen Winchester Boulevard and then rescued from a San Jose landfill and replanted later that year at the Vasona Garden Center.

The Campbell Historic Preservation Board and the Campbell Parks and Recreation Foundation are seeking about $1,600 to cover the cost of the replacement plaque.

For information on how to donate, contact Paul Resnikoff at info@camp bellparks.org, or donate to the Campbell Parks and Recreation Foundation on- line through PayPal atwww.campbellparks.org.
