Christmas will come early this year for inhabitants of a homeless family shelter in Oakland who will be presented with bicycles Monday in Berkeley by the superintendent of the Alameda County Office of Education.
This is one of many efforts by Building Opportunities for Self-Sufficiency, an Alameda County nonprofit organization that is dedicated to lifting families and individuals out of homelessness by providing them with life skills that will help them become self-sufficient.
“We are so pleased to be able to bring bikes to children, who often only can look longingly at others riding on a new bicycle,” Superintendent Sheila Jordan said. “An added benefit, of course is that it also encourages children to get outside and have a chance to exercise and
play.”
The donation, which will be given at 2 p.m. at Ursula Sherman Village, located at 711 Harrison St., was made possible with funding provided by the Alameda County Office of Education and a California Department of Education grant.
