San Jose fire personnel this morning rescued a 24-year-old man who became stuck in a material chute at the city’s Zanker Road Landfill, a fire department spokesman said.
Twenty-two fire and rescue personnel responded to the landfill, located at 675 Los Esteros Road, around 7:50 a.m. after someone at the facility called 911 and reported that an employee was injured, fire Capt. Anthony Melendrez said.
Melendrez said a man accidentally became stuck in the loading part of a “material chute,” a machine that sorts out various products at the landfill.
Rescuers extricated the man at about 8:20 a.m. by strapping him onto a backboard, then placing him in a basket and lowering him down from the second floor of the two-story building onto a gurney.
Melendrez did not specify what kind of injuries the man suffered, but said he was taken to a hospital and was in stable condition.
