Two formerly conjoined twins who were separated in a 10-hour surgery at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital earlier this month are expected to go home sometime this week, hospital officials said.
The 2-year-old twins, Angelica and Angelina Sabuco, will make a brief appearance at a news conference at the hospital this afternoon with their mother, Ginady Sabuco, and an aunt.
The medical team involved in the surgery, including lead surgeon Dr. Gary Hartman and plastic surgeon Dr. Peter Lorenz, will provide an update on the twins’ progress since their Nov. 1 surgery and what’s ahead for them, hospital spokeswoman Reena Mukamal said.
The procedure involved about 20 physicians and 15 to 20 operating room staff, hospital officials said.
The twins, born in the Philippines and now living in San Jose, have separate hearts, ribs and digestive systems but were joined at the sternum and had livers and diaphragms that were tightly fused together.
The girls are recovering in the hospital’s pediatric intensive care unit.
The news conference is taking place at 4:30 p.m.
