By Khalida Sarwari

Feminist icon Gloria Steinem will be the keynote speaker tonight at a Stanford University symposium that will mark the 40th anniversary of the founding of Ms. Magazine.

The social activist, who founded the magazine in 1972, will give the keynote address at 7:30 p.m. at the CEMEX Auditorium in Zambrano Hall at the Graduate School of Business.

Prior to that, a 3 p.m. panel discussion will be held as part of the “Ms. at 40 and the Future of Feminism” symposium at the Stanford Humanities Center.

The discussion will center on the role Ms. Magazine has played in the women’s movement and the challenges and opportunities feminist journalists will face in the future.

Participating in that panel will be the magazine’s current executive editor Katherine Spillar, along with former Ms. editors and feminist bloggers.

The university is hosting a series of events through March to commemorate the anniversary of the magazine’s founding including lectures, panel discussions, performances, exhibits and an essay contest.

The events are free, but require advance registration. For information about ticket availability, call the Stanford Ticket Office at (650) 725-2787. A complete program of events is available at http://gender.stanford.edu/msat40.
