Law enforcement agencies participating in the regional Avoid campaign will continue to patrol Bay Area streets and freeways to apprehend drunken drivers through New Year’s Day.
Since the beginning of the campaign on Dec. 12 through Dec. 27, officers representing 125 law enforcement agencies have arrested 1,871 individuals for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Three fatalities attributed to an impaired driver were reported in that same period.
Last year, the campaign yielded 3,360 DUI arrests and three fatalities.
