A police officer shot and killed a man in San Jose early this morning.
The shooting occurred at about 6:10 a.m. in the 700 block of Hillsdale Avenue, across from the Central County Occupational Center, police Sgt. Jason Dwyer said.
The man has not yet been identified.
Dwyer said the shooting happened during a confrontation between the suspect and two San Jose police officers who had responded after someone reported seeing a man walking in the area with a handgun.
It does not appear that the man fired his gun at the officers, Dwyer said.
About half an hour prior to that call, police had received a report of gunshots near Casselino Drive. Officers who responded did not find any victims. Later on, they found a car with bullet holes, and it is believed that the man killed was responsible for shooting at the car, Dwyer said.
“We don’t have any reason to believe there are additional victims,” he said.
Dwyer said that prior to the officer-involved shooting, the man left a blood trail for a few hundred yards on the sidewalk at the corner of Narvaez and Hillsdale avenues. It is unclear why the man would have been bleeding at that point, police said.
The Central County Occupational Center, which provides career-technical classes, is closed today. Classes will resume on Tuesday.
