Man struck, killed by car while walking with grandson

The Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office today identified a man who was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking with his grandson in Santa Clara on Friday night as 79-year-old Rui Hong Lin.

The collision occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the 900 block of Teal Drive.

Lin, of Santa Clara, was walking in a residential area with his 2-year-old grandson when a silver 2001 Chevrolet van hit them, police said.

Emergency responders found Lin and the boy on the ground, both suffering from significant injuries.

They were transported to a hospital, where Lin died. His grandson is expected to survive, police said.

The driver of the van is a 45-year-old woman from Santa Clara, police said. Neither she nor her passenger was injured, and the van did not have any visible damage.

Police are continuing to investigate the accident.
