Minions, stormtroopers and dinosaurs will be roaming El Quito Park this summer, not on the grounds but on the silver screen. The city’s outdoor movie series kicks off on June 17 with a screening of the 2015 computer-animated comedy, “Minions.”

The event, organized annually by the Saratoga Parks and Recreation Commission and the city of Saratoga, will feature two more family-friendly movies in July and August. Admission to all the movies is free.

The July 15 screening will be another 2015 hit, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” The final movie of the series is the Disney-Pixar computer-animated flick, “The Good Dinosaur,” on Aug. 19.

The commission typically selects movies that are appropriate for both younger children and the pre-teen and teenage group. Two of the three films are rated PG, while “Star Wars” carries a PG-13 rating.

Each movie is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Organizers encourage people to come early and enjoy a picnic in the park and entertainment by Dottie the Clown, who will be making balloons or painting faces prior to every screening. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own food along with blankets or lawn chairs or indulge in snacks and refreshments, including popcorn, doughnut holes, meat and cheese platters, coffee and hot chocolate.

This marks the fifth year that the commission has held its summer movie night series. Last year’s series drew an average attendance of about 450 people per event. The purpose of the movie series is to bring the community together, said Parks and Recreation Commission chairman Rick Pierce.

“Saratoga’s summer movie nights are designed to help build a sense of community and friendship among Saratoga’s residents,” said Pierce. “These events … allow local residents to meet one another and enjoy a fun evening with their children.”

The first movie night is being sponsored by the Saratoga Intero Real Estate Services.

The screenings will be held at El Quito Park, 12855 Paseo Presada. Attendees are asked to enter through the West Hope Church parking lot at 12850 Saratoga Ave.
