The Montalvo Arts Center has been awarded a $10,000 grant by the National Endowment for the Arts that will be used to underwrite exhibitions and public presentations by resident artists.
Executive director Angela McConnell said she was honored to receive the grant.
“These funds make it possible for Montalvo to uphold its mission to support artists in their creative process and to share inspiring contemporary art with the local community,” she said.
The NEA Art Works grant supports the creation of art that promotes public engagement with art and lifelong learning in the arts, as well as enhancing the livability of communities through the arts.
This year, the NEA received 1,528 applications and gave 895 Art Works grants totaling $23.4 million to nonprofit organizations around the country.
At Montalvo, the grant will help support the Sally and Don Lucas Artists Residency Program (LAP), the third oldest artists’ residency of its kind in the country.
Each year, the program hosts both emerging and established artists from around the world who are active in nearly every contemporary artistic discipline, including visual arts, design, literary arts, choreography, film, performance art, music and the culinary arts.
The NEA funds will be used to underwrite exhibitions and public presentations by up to 24 LAP artists, which will be held at Montalvo as well as other Bay Area venues. The artists will be selected to participate either by invitation or by a juried process.
“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support exciting and diverse arts projects that will take place throughout the United States,” said Joan Shigekawa, the NEA’s acting chairwoman.
“Whether it is through a focus on education, engagement or innovation, these projects all contribute to vibrant communities and memorable experiences for the public to engage with the arts.”
This marks the fifth consecutive year that Montalvo has received this grant.
