San Jose police are investigating the death of a 57-year-old man who died six days after being assaulted on New Year’s Day.

Officers arrested Danny James Klontz, 51, on Thursday in connection with Manuel Andrade’s death. Investigators believe Klontz assaulted Andrade in a parking lot on the southeast corner of Pomona and Alma avenues.

Andrade did not seek medical attention and was found dead in his encampment on Jan. 6, police said. Three days later, coroners determined that he died as a result of blunt force trauma to the head, police said.

Klontz is also alleged to have assaulted a 46-year-old female victim who tried to intervene, according to police.

He remains in custody at Santa Clara County Main Jail. He, along with Andrade and the second victim, are all residents of San Jose.

The motive behind the killing is under investigation.

Andrade’s death marks the city’s second homicide of the year.
