San Jose police officers have tentatively agreed to continue a 10 percent pay cut for the next fiscal year to prevent additional layoffs, the San Jose Police Officers’ Association announced today.
The union said the agreement would save the city $25 million.
“The police officers of this city are stepping up to the plate once again to help San Jose through these difficult fiscal times,” Jim Unland, president of the Police Officers’ Association, said in a statement. “The citizens of our city should be proud of and thankful for the men and women who protect them.”
The agreement must be ratified by members of the police union.
Last year, police officers agreed to a 10 percent pay cut to close a $115 million budget deficit, but were in arbitration over whether the pay cut was one time or ongoing.
The agreement between officers and the city today continues the cut through the 2012-2013 fiscal year and puts off potential arbitration on whether the pay cut is ongoing until 2013, the union said.
