Mountain View police today said a sexual assault reported by a 16-year-old girl last week was fabricated.
The girl reported to police on Oct. 14 that she was assaulted at Whisman Park, located at 310 Easy St., sometime between Sept. 26 and 28, according to police.
She told police that she was on her way home after running on the Stevens Creek Trail, but stopped for a drink of water from a fountain at the park. She said that’s when someone grabbed her from behind and pulled her into a women’s bathroom nearby, where she said one man held her against a wall while another man groped her. They let her go when they heard voices outside the bathroom and did not harm her, she told police.
Police released a statement today saying the assault did not happen.
Liz Wylie, a spokeswoman for the department, said police are not releasing information about the victim or the case because she is a juvenile.
“In the same way that people sometimes legitimately delay reporting very real crimes for various personal reasons, sometimes people report crimes that did not at all happen for various personal reasons,” Wylie said in a statement.
She said police will not pursue charges against the girl.
